Once In A Lifetime Wahoo ! MagBay Baja 2025

An Epic Season Closer in Mexico: Wahoo, Striped Marlin, and a Once-in-a-Lifetime Moment at Magdalena Bay

Every fishing season has its highlights. And then there are trips that stand apart — the kind that get talked about for years, retold at the dock, and remembered as that one trip.

This year’s run on the Success to Magdalena Bay (Mag Bay) in Baja California, Mexico was exactly that.

A Special Trip, Once a Year

To be clear, we are first and foremost a fishing charter business. Our focus year-round is delivering world-class fishing experiences for our clients.

However, once a year, Captain Cary Dodson puts together a very special trip — an annual Magdalena Bay fishing and diving expedition reserved for a small group of close friends and longtime clients he’s built relationships with over the years.

This isn’t a commercial spearfishing charter. It’s a tradition. A reunion. A chance to fish, dive, and explore one of the most legendary fisheries in Baja with people who truly appreciate it.

Magdalena Bay at Its Best

Mag Bay delivered in a big way this season.

The fishing was nothing short of spectacular:

  • Wahoo in numbers and size we haven’t seen in years

  • Consistent striped marlin action

  • Classic Baja conditions that reminded everyone why this region holds such a legendary reputation

The wahoo in particular were next-level — fast, aggressive, and absolutely massive. Between trolling and casting, anglers were rewarded with blistering runs and unforgettable battles.

The Final 15 Minutes

And then came the moment that turned an incredible trip into a story that will live forever.

On the very last day of the trip — literally the final 15 minutes before wrapping up — Captain Dodson made a decision that perfectly sums up who he is.

Just trunks, a mask and snorkel, and a speargun.

He slipped into the water one last time.

Moments later, Cary surfaced with his personal-best wahoo, an absolute giant weighing over 90 pounds - A true exclamation point on an already unforgettable journey.

A Season to Remember

Trips like this don’t happen every year. And they can’t be planned — they happen when preparation, conditions, experience, and a little bit of luck all come together.

This Magdalena Bay expedition was the perfect season closer:

  • Incredible fishing

  • Once-in-a-lifetime spearfishing

  • And a reminder of why we’re so passionate about what we do

Mexico showed up in a big way this year, delivering some of the best wahoo and striped marlin and Yellowtail fishing seen in years — and we’re grateful to have been there to experience it with friends who share the same respect for the ocean.

Here’s to another unforgettable chapter in the books — and to the stories that will be told until the next season begins.
