Why It Costs More

You're not paying
for a ticket.

You're paying for the whole boat, an attentive crew, real food, and the range to go where the fish actually are.

Avet reels and Seeker rods — premium tackle aboard Success
Premium Gear

Avet Reels. Seeker Rods.

Top-tier equipment that takes the fight out of the gear and puts it back in your hands. The same tackle serious offshore anglers buy for themselves — not rental rods that have seen better days.

All-inclusive meals and comfortable bunks aboard Success Sportfishing
All-Inclusive Comfort

Real Food. Real Sleep.

Oversized bunks with AC mean you're rested at the 5am bluefin bite. Fresh meals at every sitting keep your energy where it needs to be when a 200-pound fish is on the line.

Expert Captain Cary Dodson and crew — Success Sportfishing San Diego
Expert Crew

Captain Cary. Proven Track Record.

Decades on San Diego's offshore waters. Captain Cary "deviates from the herd and does his own thing — and it consistently pays off." Your private charter goes where the fish are.

Common Questions

Bluefin Tuna Charter FAQ

When is bluefin tuna season in San Diego?

Bluefin can be found year-round, but peak season typically runs June through October when large schools migrate through Southern California and Baja waters.

How big do bluefin tuna get off San Diego?

Commonly 20–80 lbs, but fish over 100 lbs are caught regularly. In recent years anglers have landed giants exceeding 200, 250, and even 300 pounds.

Are overnight fishing trips worth it for bluefin?

Yes. Overnight and multi-day trips reach distant grounds, allow more time to locate active fish, and consistently produce larger bluefin than shorter day trips.

Can beginners catch bluefin tuna?

Absolutely. Many first-time anglers catch bluefin every season. Captain Cary and crew provide instruction, tackle setup, and hands-on assistance regardless of experience level.

How far offshore are bluefin from San Diego?

Sometimes within 20 miles, but more commonly 30–100 miles offshore near banks and Mexican waters. A private charter goes where the marks are — not where the schedule allows.

Private charter vs. open sport boat — what's the difference?

Private charters offer a smaller passenger load, greater flexibility, more crew attention, and a personalized experience. Open sport boats are lower cost but you share with strangers.
